Meet ILA Board Candidates -- Throughout the Conference
As a way for conference attendees to personally meet with board candidates, each candidate has agreed to be at the ILA booth within the Exhibit Hall for at least one block of time.
Wednesday, October 18
Grand Opening of Exhibits, 3:00 - 6:00 pm
Enjoy your first chance to visit with the exhibitors. Hors d'oeuvres and beverages will be served.
The Iowa City Public Library and Antelope Lending Library bookmobiles will also be on site during this time to tour. Learn more about the Iowa City Public Library's bookmobile during a concurrent session on Friday at 11:20 a.m.
Silent Auction and Raffle - Iowa Library Association Foundation (ILAF), Wednesday 3:00 - 6:00 pm and Thursday 8:30 am - 6:00 pm, Exhibit Hall
Proceeds from the ILAF's Silent Auction and Raffle are used to support speakers at the Annual Conference, scholarships, the Leadership Institute and continuing education for library staff. Keep your eye on your favorite items to make sure you aren't overbid.

SLIS Anniversary Reception, 6:30 - 9:00 pm, Coral Grand Ballroom
The University of Iowa School of Library and Information Science is celebrating its 50th Anniversary with a lively reception, kicking off the ILA Annual Conference. All ILA Conference attendees are invited and there will be hors d’oeuvres and desserts, a cash bar, and a special retrospective of photos.
Thursday, October 19
New Members / First-Time Attendee Breakfast, 7:45 - 8:25 am
First time attendees will be given an introduction to ILA, its officers and staff, and information about how to get the most out of the conference.
Leadership Institute Reunion Breakfast, 7:45 - 8:25 am
In a schedule change from previous years, the Leadership Institute Reunion Breakfast will be held on Thursday.
Opening General Session and Keynote with Kory Stamper, 8:30 - 10:00 am
Kory is a lexicographer at Merriam-Webster and just published her debut, Word by Word. She will take you on a wild romp through the ways that the dictionary must follow the language into inclusivity, and how tracking and recording the language puts us face to face with the need to be inclusive and our own assumptions about what inclusivity is.
On Thursday the Exhibit Hall will be open from 8:30 - 11:45 am and 1:00 - 5:15 pm. Be sure to visit the Exhibit Hall during breaks from concurrent sessions.
Awards Luncheon, 12:00 - 1:15 pm
All awards will be presented during lunch, making it a great opportunity for recipients to invite colleagues, family, or friends to join them. Exhibitors, sponsors, and corporate members will also be recognized during this lunch.
Subdivision Business Meetings - Session 1, 1:25 - 2:10 pm and Session 2, 4:30 - 5:15 pm
This is your chance to meet with other members of your subdivision and to make plans for the coming year. ILA subdivisions provide networking and leadership opportunities and give you a chance to exchange information and best practices about your areas of interest.
Dinner and Trivia Night, 6:00 pm
Dan Wardell of Iowa Public Television returns to host Trivia Night. In this evening, filled with food, fun, and laughter, teams of 8 work together to answer questions designed to stump, educate, and humor you. The evening includes dinner, dessert, and a cash bar. Trivia Night is open to the general public—bring your staff, friends, and family! You’ll be placed on a team if you don’t have one. All participants must pre-register. Registration includes dinner and costs $33.
Friday, October 20
Breakfast with the ILA Board, 7:30 - 8:20 am
The board will provide updates and be available for discussion. State Librarian Michael Scott will also provide the library services update at this breakfast.
General Session, Business Meeting and Keynote with Jody Gray, 8:30 - 10:00 am
Earlier this year, the American Library Association adopted a new strategic direction for equity, diversity, and inclusion. The first goal is, “commit to ameliorating marginalization and underrepresentation within the Association and the communities served by libraries through increased understanding of the effects of historical exclusion.” Jody will discuss the importance and the complex nature of inclusion in a time where our country is visibly divided.
All Iowa Reads Lunch with author Michelle Hoover, 12:15 - 1:45 pm
This year’s All Iowa Reads selection is Bottomland, by Iowa native Michelle Hoover. Michelle’s talk is titled The Power of Fiction: Discovering the Universal within the Individual. She will speak about what inspired her to write Bottomland and how she dramatized the life of one small 1920s Iowa farm family to reflect the larger American experience both of the past and today.
SLIS Open House and Library Tour, 1:00 - 4:30 pm
Walk the University of Iowa School of Library and Information Science hallways, view photos and videos, enjoy refreshments, and record your own oral/video history for future generations of librarians.
The Library Is Open t-shirts will be available for pre-order through Oct. 6. You must order and pay for your t-shirt online prior to the conference. T-shirts will be available for pick-up at the conference.
There are two t-shirt design options: one with a large logo on the front of the shirt and another with a smaller logo on the left chest. The designs are available in antique jade or ice gray and in heavy or women's T styles.
Each shirt is $14 with additional cost for extra-large sizes. More information is available on the ordering website.
